Applied Design: Let’s Get Symmetrical

I love Ms. Benson’s use of symmetry in our Room of the Week.   There are very bold colors and patterns in the room, but it still feels very calm and orderly because everything in the room is symmetrically balanced.  Starting in the foreground with the pair of leopard print ottomans, Ms. Benson created symmetry throughout the room by using matching pairs.  In this example, the symmetry in the room also helps to create a contained sitting area that seems cohesive and cozy.

BENEFITS OF SYMMETRY

1. Helps a room feel balanced

2. Creates order and calm

3. Can help to establish a focal point or draw the eye toward a special view or a beautiful vignette.

4. Using pairs in your design can help to disperse the colors in your color palette around the room in a pleasing way.
