Design is in the Details: Lighting the Outdoors

It’s the little details in the Room of the Week that take it from being just a patio, to being an outdoor room.  There are places to put your feet up, set a drink or magazine down, vases for flowers, and plenty of lighting.  I love that there are lanterns for candles placed all over the patio…you can imagine it glowing at nighttime.

Just like you would in a room in your home, you should light your patio in a few different ways, appropriate for the different activities you will be doing outside.

  1. Are you going to BBQ?  You’re probably going to want an extra light nearby.
  2. Do you want to read outside?  You’ll want a lamp or candle nearby.
  3. Are you going to eat outside?  You might want a light on the table or overhead.

Luckily, there are hundreds of outdoor lighting options for any spot on your patio.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Those solar options are very appealing to me since I don’t have easy access to electricity for my backyard patio.
