Applied Design: Adding Horizontal Lines as A Design Element

I love the horizontal lines created by the hearth, curtain valance, shelving and sofa in the Room of the Week.  They help to make a space feel more relaxed and fluid. Look around your house and think about the lines that exist already due to your architecture, flooring or any built-in or large pieces of furniture like a headboard or sofa.  Do you like the way those lines look in your house?  If so, you may want to accentuate them by adding parallel horizontal lines throughout the room.

Even if you don’t have built-in horizontal lines in a room you can always add them yourself.  Here are a few examples:
