Color Palette: Opposites Attract

There are only really three colors in the Room of the Week…white, beige and black.  The way the colors are juxtaposed next to each other makes all the colors stronger. The black fireplace stands out against the light wood surround.  The dark area rug highlights the white sofa and chair.  The white linen lampshade allows the legs of the tripod floor lamp to shine.

I used products from Ikea to help demonstrate this point a little further.

  1. When you look at the dark/light pairings do you gravitate to one color?
  2. What is highlighted in each scenario? (ex. do you notice the chair legs on the darker or lighter chair more?)
  3. How does the color change the way you perceive size?

Do you have any opposite color pairings in your house?  Do you have a favorite combo?
