Design is in the Details: How to Style a Rectangle Coffee Table

One of my favorite details in the Room of the Week is the perfectly styled, but not overdone, coffee table that shows you can create a vignette that is both beautiful and functional. It was styled perfectly by Furbish Studio for the photograph, but you can imagine that it would be easy to keep styled if you were actually living in the room…a stack of magazines to read, a candle for ambiance, a tray to corral little trinkets you set down.  And, all those objects look perfect on top of the table because they following basic design principles of shape, color, rhythm, texture, etc.

  • The stack of rectangle magazines and the rectangle try repeat the shape of the table.
  • The blue patterned elements continue to the color palette.
  • The round objects break up the lines and create rhythm and movement around the table.
  • There are smooth and rough and shiny textures mixed together.
