I bought this old bench years ago for pennies at a yard sale because i loved the mid-century hairpin legs so much. The wood was never in great shape, so this year I decided make it over. I was inspired by the furniture created by Garza Marfa…the brightly colored legs on their furniture are so much fun.
I don’t own any power tools so I needed a piece of wood ready to go. Luckily, Home Depot has pre-made (cut, sanded) oak stair treads in the perfect 48″ size I needed. I liked that the front edge of the stair tread was rounded, which is perfect for a bench. I simply stained it and put on a few coats of spar urethane, so it could withstand all the rain we get here on the east coast. A little green spray paint for my legs (which would be sooo easy to update should the mood strike) and my bench was ready!
So happy with how it turned out.
This project is perfect for anyone with only a small amount of DIY skills. If you don’t already own hairpin legs, you can purchase them brand new from a variety of Etsy shops, like this one. If you decide to make one, send pics…I’d love to see!
Hope you have a great weekend!
